[It's a repeat, but a timely one! Winter is coming (boo! hiss!) and the bed as a refuge for cold weather is a fact of life. So how's your sheet situation?]

As Kermit famously noted, It's not easy being green. There are so many factors to consider when trying to live an easy-on-the-environment life. This Remodelista article got me thinking about green or eco bedding.

It was a Big Holiday Weekend. It was probably just my mood, but I wasn't up for it. Where did the sun go?

It's (still) summer, the very best time of the year. Forget about the soon-to-be leaves turning colors or football season or even the holidays. Everything, but everything, is best in summer. And the hotter the better.

Case of Bass

[After carrying my little red Case of Bass around for the last weekend and having people comment on it, a re-post seemed warranted. Any guest can plug in and play music, or a favorite off YouTube, whatever. Also! All those videos with crap sound on your phone / iPad? Plug them into the Case of Bass and hear what's going on. This works wonderfully for SNL skits. Watch the iPad, listen to the Case of Bass. It's a multi-purpose tool.]

It's time to think about entertaining outside. Gin and tonic and lime and friends and the smell of Coppertone.

Portland Perfection

Let's have a little travelogue today, shall we? No salvage talk (unless it's incidental), but a discussion about the joy that is Portland. Why? Because I just had a lovely, perhaps almost perfect, day in this wacky little burg.

(Another repeat! This one for the summer road-trip season...because I know you have a road-trip scheduled.)

You know what Joshua Tree is, right? Sure, it's an album by U2. If that's your answer, you are a philistine. As am I. Turns out Joshua Tree is also...a tree, and a National Park in California. You learn something new every day! I figured this out when I drove by "Joshua Tree National Park" off-ramp signs on I10 in Cali. Being a quick study, I figured the park was probably around long before the U2 album.

I recently posted about using salvaged plastic in your home design projects. And it got a couple of nice comments. Victory!

Salvage in design is my thing, and industrial salvage is where my heart lives. But when it's time to make a purchase for the house, I don't discriminate against any type of salvage.

The other day I heard a vicious rumor. My friend Cris told me there was a place on McLoughlin with a pile of granite scrap for people to dig through if they so desired. The name of his magical place? Wong's Building Supply. I cannot stand an unsubstantiated rumor so I went on a field trip.

I have several old breadboxes in the house because I think they're cool. I store stuff in them, like napkins and tea. They look pretty. I'm a sucker for pretty. But they don't really work for me for bread. If I put fresh bread in them, the bread goes stale really fast. Perhaps these old breadboxes weren't supposed to keep bread fresh? Maybe they were supposed to keep rodents away from it, or something like that.
