How many times have we talked about the fact that it would be easier to get a guy to ask for directions than to find a good light fixture at a decent price? Or even a decent light fixture at an exorbitant price? It just ain't happening.

Does this happen to you? You go to pull out your recycling, and you notice the freakish amount of liquor bottles in the glass bin. You pause. You think about what the recycle guy (mine are guys) must think of you. You hope that instead of judging, they just wish you'd invite them to your next party. But you suspect they're judging.

If you're sick of reading about the crazy yellow room, stop now and go look at some cat memes. I won't hate you or blame you. I will think you're nuts, though, 'cause designing this room is boatloads o' fun. Just check out the photos above!

A friend recently asked, "Do you know of an interesting but not ridiculously expensive lighting store?"

Jeez, there's a question for the ages. That one's just about as tough as "What's the meaning of life", or "Do I look fat in these pants?"

This is repeat post, prompted by this info in an email from Salvage Works in North Portland: "Just in time for wedding season. Vintage Mason jars and antique medicine bottles make great vases for romantic flower bouquets. All clear jars are $3, all blue and purple jars are $10."

A friend recently asked for help with a specific party problem - decorating ideas. She needed to decorate for 8th grade graduation, and balloons / crepe paper were mentioned and then quickly abandoned as options. Balloons are hell on the environment and critters within, and crepe paper is a disposable. What to do? How 'bout some good-for-the-environment options for party decorations?

Got Lights?

Lighting is often the bĂȘte noire of home decorating. What with all the ugly, expensive options, don't you just want to string a bulb from the ceiling and call it good? No? OK, then. Get ready for something new. Better, even thrilling options! These two finds speak to a sweet spot of mine - keeping non-recyclables / trash out of the landfill.

In one day, actually minutes apart, I received two really fun emails. These readers had vintage or scrap items they no longer wanted. Neither was going to landfill the item, and both wanted to find a good home for their stuff.

Light Your Way

A repeat....
Next time you need a new sconce or dome light, try thinking outside the (big) box (store). Anybody can buy those lights! You want something different. You didn't realize it before, but you do. You want something different. Something old. Something used, refurbished, re-wired.

I live in a small house. In my mind that means that I should only buy cool stuff. The logic goes like this. If I only have one table, and only one light over that table, both had better be cool.
