Remember these C clamps?? The clamps I had to pry out of my dad's hands?

When I Die??

I have a lot of cool stuff. I don't have kids and I'm not worried about college funds, so I've spent my money on me. But there is an odd problem associated with my cool stuff. Sometimes friends come over and, after looking around, they have this to say.
When you die, can I have your (fill in the blank)?

I really need C clamps and bench vices! I am going to use them on the deck to hold on railings, etc., so I need a lot of them. I want them to rust into place. So, cool, right? I think this was Asa's idea (one of the Arciform guys), and I really like it.

I called my dad and told him I needed all his bench vices and clamps, and he said Absolutely Not. He needed them all.

Hooks and Chains

If I told you I had a large collection of hooks and chains around the house, would you think less of me? Would you roll your eyes in a world weary way and say, "Oh please. Who isn't into S&M these days?"

How many of you have seen an old barn covered with cool, vintage signs while driving through the country? Or in a movie scene, perhaps. Here's the deal. Old signs are fun to collect. And I think they're useful, too.

Is This Room For Real?

I have a friend who's an artist. I like having artists as friends or artistic friends because sometimes I get art as swag. But it's not all paintings and pottery, unfortunately. As I hang out with them I see their houses, and then I start to feel inferior. Here's an example.

Does this room look fake to you (pic 1)? Like it was staged for an episode of Friends, perhaps, where nobody could possibly live in such a cute apartment on the salary of a waitress or assistant chef? Yes, that's what I think, too. There's just no possible way this is a real room in a real house.

The answer: a boatload. (FYI - that's a technical accounting term. Feel free to use it.) I love containers! Years ago I gave myself permission to buy vintage containers of all sizes, in all materials, in whatever state of disrepair, as long as they appealed to me and could help organize my space. If you like the thought, give yourself permission to start a container inventory (this is a euphemism for permission to shop). Every time you think you need to buy a plastic container to hold your paperclips, or a bin to hold sports equipment re:Think! Turn to your inventory instead. Actually, I just saw some old canvas mail-sorting bags that would be great for storing sports equipment.

My dad is a bit nuts. Or maybe a lot nuts. I don't like to think about it too much because, along with his big snowshoe feet, I inherited a little of that nuts. That's the way it goes, right?

OK, I love my container. I think it may be the coolest thing ever. Not all the ideas for my house were mine, but this one sure was. I must admit, too, that I am still in a hose nozzle / sprinkler phase. I have seen the skeptical expression on some people's faces regarding this one, so why don't you judge for yourself.

My friend Suz would be really easy to hate. She lives in a gorgeous Victorian in a cool neighborhood. Check it out.

Not bad, right? Like I said, it would be very easy to hate her. And the inside of the house? It is full of her grandparents' antiques. I don't have any antiques from my grandparents, for one simple reason. They didn't have any good furniture. I have good memories only. Those I can handle.
